In answer to your letter of this morning in relation to the manner and disposition of Indian good by Redick McKee disbursing agent of Indian Commissioners in California. I make the following statement which came immediately under my observation.
The goods were transported in wagons belonging to the [Illegible] Dept of the army and from time to time they were presented to the Indians, and on several occasions articles form the same were disposed of to the soldiers of the escort command. The principle article being tobacco for which R. McKee received pay. The officer also purchased a few goods consisting of blankets pipes scarfs &c.
