LET'S GET TECHNICAL

To supplement the reference service
rendered to the County branches by the
I ' Central Reference Division , the Techni-cal
Reference Libra1·ian devotes one
evening each week to readers' advisory
work at a branch. '.i'o date these
visits have been limited to the Tor-·
ranee, Compton and South Gate areas .
The purpose of our work is to acquaint
patrons with the services and resources
of the County Library, in the
technical book fi1:;lds particularly.
Of equal importance, we become better
acquainted with the community and its
peculiar needs.
Our work , however, is not limited
to advising patrons in locr~l brf.mchos.
Much time is devoted to outside contacts
in the area served by the
brtmch. We call on employers nnd
employees of industrial conc c~ rns,
heads of departments of city governments,
heud of the evening school,
and o. thers, to e.n list their, coop~. r-ation
and to acquaint them with the
type of service they can obtain from
the local library. Notices nro posted
in these pl aces, to advertise our
weekly visits .
Al though this wor1c at the branches
hns been carried on but a short time ,
it has borne some tangible results.
Over a period of two months at one o.f
the branches, we hnd the privilege of
supplying technico.l ma t orie.l to .::1.pproxima
t ely 75 patrons, most of which
dealt with advunced t echniques in the
!vocations or occupations in which
1pntrons were engaeed. It was grt' .. ti-·
fying to have several persons whom we
had served, express a deep apprecia tion
1'or the assistance given them, and a
wish that we might continue the work.
